SECRET OF HOLES ON YOUR CAR DOOR WEATHER STRIPPING

Did you notice that there’re many holed on your car door weather stripping or trunk lid weather stripping?  You can go to your garage and check all the car doors or trunk weatherstrip. You might find these small holes located every 10”-15” along the weather seals. Are they necessary? Today we will talk and discuss about them.

First, we must clarify about profile type. Usually, door weather stripping made from EPDM soft sponge, foam rubber that have proper density to seal the weather, heat, dust, and sound as well. There are many shapes of the profile seals to fit each door frame. We can roughly categorize it as bubble shape and Lip shape (usually be K-shape or arrow shape).

All the holes we are talking about will appear on the bubble shape door weather stripping profile. It will not find on lip shape, K-shape or arrow shape. Now you might know already what they are for.

It’s simply pressure theory. These holes will be necessary for the bubble shape weather stripping and have close loop of seal. In the other words there will be close air inside the bubble and have no way out.

Notice when you are sitting in small complete close room and have no windows open. Then someone open the door to get inside the room. It will cause the door at the other side have vibration or shaking. Because the air pressure inside the room was changed. It will not happen if there is some window or door are wide open before that.

Back to our weather stripping seals, the bunch of holes it’s like you keep your room window open. They will release the air pressure inside the bubble and create low resistance while you are closing car door. It will not bounce back too hard. You don’t need to slam the door to close it completely. It also helps better seal the weather.

These figures show the different of weather stripping seal with and without pressure holes.
